Mythicals

mythological behemoth and leviathanThe Age of Myth has begun. And the garden gnomes aim to bring the world stronger myths.

We seek novella-length manuscripts that cast old myths into new lenses or that create new myths out of thin air. Myth-makers, ignite!

Here’s what we want:

  • Manuscripts should consist of 20,000-40,000 words
  • We want stories, not lists of gods. In other words, tell a story within a mythological system, one you created or one that already exists. All ideas and themes are worth exploring. Just make sure you tell a damn good story. Make it weird, make it absurd, but make it good.
  • Prose, not poetry

Give us gods, demigods, demons, supermen, mortals, and everything in between. Make them dark and mark them powerful. Or make them light and elemental. As long as they’re true.

Stories can be horrific, satirical, magical, romantic, scientific, or anywhere on the storytelling spectrum. Hell, you can mix extremes if you have the chutzpah. We like dark and we like dark satire. Of course, we like laugh out loud outlandishness too. But what we really like is weird and off-the-wall. Most of all, we just like a good story well told.

Pick a myth. Any myth. Put your own spin on it. Can’t find one that suits your fancy? Make one up.

What We Offer

If we like your story, we’ll publish it in all the digital formats (Kindle, ePub, PDF) and distribute it to all the major book sellers (Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords), as well as sell it on our own website. All writers receive 50% royalties. Paid monthly.

Our relationship will be for three years initially with a renewal option.

What We Ask For In Return

First worldwide digital and archival rights. You retain print rights. But you should understand that many traditional publishers consider e-books previously published.

We look for writers who are active on at least two of the major social networks:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • YouTube
  • Others

Authors who are active on these social networks are more likely to take an active interest in promoting their books. You should also have an author website and a blog that you write to regularly (not necessarily every day, but regularly).

These are not requirements, but you’re more likely to get published if you can show you have a willingness and the ability to assist in marketing your book. We consider ourselves co-publishers with the author. We’re not your boss and we’re not your dumping ground. We’re in it together so let’s work together for the common (er, mutual) good.

As an author with Garden Gnome Publications, we’ll give you a monthly column on our blog. You submit one non-fiction blog post per month and we’ll publish it with a link back to your website/blog and to your book sales page to help promote the book.

How To Submit

Before submitting, read our general submission guidelines. No deadline. Send your story when you have it complete along with a cover letter. In your cover letter, give us a 100-200 word summary of your story.

  • Single space text in Times New Roman, 12-point font
  • Double space between paragraphs

The subject line of your e-mail should read:

In the body of your e-mail, provide a 100-200 word bio and a 200-word-limit story summary. Along with your novella manuscript, attach a 1-2 page plot synopsis as an attachment. Send to submissions @ gardengnomepubs.com.
