The Perfect Outing

By Gary Hewitt

nasty creatureThere was not a soul.

“This place is perfect. Peace, quiet and a beautiful beach. What more could you ask for, Mel?”

Mel anchored herself to her partner’s elbow.

“Nothing Charlie. Let’s fix a blanket and enjoy the sun.

Charlie dropped a llama-decorated sheet before ripping off his polo shirt. Mel lay down clad in a bikini and stretched her legs away to the horizon.

“Lay down and hold me.”

Mel jerked her foot away before Charlie could obey.

“What’s wrong?”

She rubbed her left sole. Blood oozed into her open palm.

“Something stabbed me. It really stings.”

“Let me have a look.”

Charlie brushed sand away from her wound. A small puncture with a thorny appendage gazed back.

“What is it?”

“I’m not sure. It looks like you’ve stepped on something. I‘ll pull it out.”

Charlie pinched the slender sliver and tried to ease the invader back. He stopped when his partner yelled.

“What are you doing? That bloody hurts.”

“I’m sorry. I’m going to have to run you to the doctor. Whatever it is has gone right into your foot.”

“That’s just great. So much for our perfect day. Why did you have to come to this sodding beach in the first place?”

Charlie led his hobbling girlfriend to the Megane. Mel scratched at her left calf.

“My whole leg is swelling up now.”

Charlie had driven for less than ten minutes before his partner tore at her stomach.

“Charlie, I feel terrible.”

He braked and Mel’s stomach was yellow and distended. She screamed when her skin was pierced by a skeletal antenna. A bloody chitin head peered out and gazed at Mel’s horrified boyfriend. The creature scrabbled onto her belly. Another insect soon followed.

“Charlie, help me. For God’s sake, help me.”

Charlie opened the driver’s door and ran. He just hoped the little bastards couldn’t fly.
